REANNZ joins the Auckland Internet Exchange

After seeing huge growth of traffic on our network, REANNZ has joined the AKL-IX (Auckland Internet Exchange) in order to increase the reliability and resiliency of our service. We connect using a 10Gbps link at the Chorus facility in Mayoral Drive. This new connection augments our existing peering exchange connections at the APE (Auckland Peering Exchange), WIX (Wellington Internet Exchange), and the CHIX (Christchurch Internet Exchange). 

What is a peering exchange?

A peering exchange (also known as an Internet exchange) is a network that connects ISP's, content providers, and large enterprises together for the efficient exchange of traffic. In practise this means that REANNZ members are able to exchange traffic with other users in New Zealand without crossing expensive interconnects or having their traffic leave the country to do so.

The AKL-IX provides REANNZ members a second path to some of our largest sources of content in New Zealand (Microsoft, Akamai).
