Edge routers and switches connect your campus network to the REANNZ network. We work with our members to ensure the hardware they use meets the requirements of a high performance network, and ensure they receive the highest quality connection to the advanced network backbone.

Edge devices (routers and switches) are crucial to harnessing the power, performance and benefits that the REANNZ network has to offer. These devices are also commonly referred to as customer premise equipment (CPE).

The ‘edge’ is the first point of contact for the valuable information flowing to our members’ sites and their users. Conversely, it is the last point of exit where an organisation communicates with the outside world.

Our edge devices are engineered for performance, availability and feature sets (such as routing table size, quality of service features, queuing mechanisms, power supply, etc.). They can switch and route traffic at line rate and have the buffers to deal with large traffic volumes. Additionally, and depending on member requirements, they posses an extensive range of L2, L3 and firewall features.

Edge devices can be supplied and managed by REANNZ.

Here are a few examples of topology solutions we have previously provided for our members:

  • hub and spoke WAN with separated internet;
  • multiaccess with distributed access;
  • layer 2 VPLS; and
  • layer 3 MPLS.

Who can use this service?

In order to use REANNZ-managed edge routers and switches you must first be a member of REANNZ.
